Hiroshima: Part 3

The next day we went to Miyajima Island. While it poured yesterday, this day was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for sunburns. The Island is considered to be holy and is home to many Shrines and Temples.

Our Tour guides.

The island is also home to many wild deer that wander everywhere.

The tori gate marking the entrance to the main shrine on the island, Itsukushima Shrine.

The shrine was originally built in 593 AD (rebuilt in 1168).

My outfit matches the shrine. ;)

We did not have a good view of the floating tori since it was under construction in order to repair damages from the 2011 earthquake.

An amazing piece of architecture, a five story pagoda.

Dave with some adorable Buddha statues. The artist's shop was filled with items featuring him.

The haunting view of the Island (on the left) and the fog  from the deck of the ferry boat.

The island is famous for Conger Eel on rice and fresh oysters. Guess what we had for lunch. I wish we could have spent all day on the island, since there was so much more we could have seen. This just means that we will have to make a return trip sometime in the next three years.

Our next stop was the Kintai bridge in Iwakuni City.

One of the little ice cream shops had 100 flavors. Dave had curry ice cream. Yes, curry. It was yummy.

A neat coal powered vehicle we saw in the parking lot.

After the bridge we headed back to the hotel. For dinner we tried the local Tex-Mex restaurant, Graffity Mexican Diner. It was a nice little restaurant on the 4th floor of a building. The staff speaks English and they have a nice supply of beer. The food itself was rather bland.

After dinner we wandered through the nightlife and shopping district and that was where we found the toy store with the Re-ment Hina doll sets. All in all, a very nice day. Sunday we flew home.
